No Longer at Ease is not a great novel, but it is a fine piece of literature for providing an insight into Nigerian society in the post-colonial period and the pressures on educated young people who stand neither in traditional society of their parents and grandparents, yet not fully in the world of the expatriate colonials either. No Longer at Ease, in my opinion, is actually a better book than Things Fall Apart. I also particularly liked the writing style, which uses simple words and short sentences but evokes powerful images in the mind of the reader. This is a sequel to Achebe's renowned "Things Fall Apart," a novel about European colonialism in Africa that the New York City Public Library once deemed to be among "the 100 Most Influential Books Ever Written." These people are not at ease simply because, like Obi, they struggle to find a comfortable place in a changing society that is moving from the traditional, or colonial, to the modern. The story ends with with Obi being arrested for corruption, after almost inexplicably becoming of those officials he despised so much to begin with, were it not for the fact that Achebe has skilfully being building up the pressure on his main character for the whole of the story. Chinua Achebe audaciously tackles questions of morality in this beautiful novel. I loved the easy readability of this book, though I thought the voice of the main character seemed far from the truth of what a man like that and a society like that would say or do, but it was still a really good read.

This book was required for my global studies class and I really enjoyed it. The sequel of colonialism was neocolonialism, and "No Longer At Ease" does a brilliant job of depicting the social reality of neocolonialism in post-World War II Africa. Tricky, I can see. Achebe's first book, "Things Fall Apart" was a small masterpiece in my view. He used novels and novellas to chronicle ancient African rituals and beliefs, this is the best way to preserve what can be remembered of the peoples of the Motherland.
