I first saw this movie w/ my father back in 1968, I was only 13 yrs. In terms of moving the story forward, nothing was missed, nothing was excessive. Over the years, I have watched this movie many times and Shakespeare's poetry and the innocence of Romeo and Juliet were both apparent.
