Sara’s at her office when Bitsy (Melanie Field) shows her that same newspaper article. Libby, though, is able to overpower him — typical of a journalist, really, especially a posh one — and hold a knife to his throat. When he asks what she wants she’s unable to answer, and so he makes a decision for both of them, hanging up the phone and leaving as we see his phone continue to ring as Sara calls back, having presumably made her mind up. Laszlo, though, sees right through this and lays out pretty bluntly that Mallory herself fabricated the attempted murder story in order to justify the child being taken away (this is where that whole “family of means” thing comes up again, validating a need to prove Libby was incapable of caring for her child since removing her from the care of a well-to-do family would have been the last resort.) While it still works as a double-bill binge-fest, it’s also a little disappointing we haven’t had longer with these characters. Libby insists that baby is hers as well. However, Burns is also desperate to find her and uses this as a means to race our trio there. She believes Elizabeth was incapable of caring for a child when she herself was still a child. When Goo Goo tells Libby about Burns’s offer, and cautions her about the Pinkertons, she flat-out refuses to play ball and he’s forced to take the Vanderbilt child for himself, which he claims he’s doing for her. Given what our characters found out last episode, they’re closing in on her location. Do you think Violet was lying to John about the baby? Thomas and Goo Goo’s man wait for Goo Goo to show up with the baby, with the man insisting Goo Goo told him he would be there. I suppose that’s the point. Having said that though, this penultimate chapter sets things up nicely for a tense and nail-biting finish as a big cliffhanger leaves the future for our characters looking bleak. In a way, this second season has matched the first blow for blow and it’s a shame we haven’t had longer to digest this crime drama. Libby demands to know where her child is. Mallory reminds them Elizabeth came at her with a knife but Laszlo’s not buying it. She promises her freedom and a chance to reunite with her child in exchange for giving the Vanderbilt child back. Their plans are still up in the air when Goo Goo has to leave, warning her to stay off the streets while he’s gone. When GooGoo returns, Libby is beside herself with anger and comes at him with a knife. She admits she slit that cop’s throat. Presumably pleased with his no doubt healthy bones and teeth, Goo Goo meets with Fat Jack, who informs him of Burns’s offer of payment for the child’s release.
