I rated this 5 stars, but I LOVE the Universal horror classics! This one felt the most comic bookish and like the first two films moved at a brisk pace.

This film as a lot of characters and plot points, at 68 minutes it is challenge to grasp each one with such a short amount of screen time. Bela Lugosi in a brilliant characterisation is a malevolent Ygor steals the film from his more worthy fellow actors, which includes the malign Lionel Atwill as Doctor Bohmer. I think Universal struggled a little with the Monster with Chaney and then Lugosi in the main role until Glenn Strange came along. The short run time and high energy keep its audience attention, but if it were say 5 minutes longer, it may have felt more fleshed out and satisfying. Director Erle C. Kenton, who began his long career during the silent era, appearing first as an actor in 1915, still gives us nods to the expressionist elements of the previous films. Sir Cedrick Hardwick adds his professionalism to the screen and probably holds the movie together.
